Bismarck Rocks

This famous rock formation is the trademark for Mwanza City and for this website as well. The rock formation is named after the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck (because of his helmet). Tanzania was a German Colony - under the name ‘German East Africa’ - together with present day’s Rwanda and Burundi.

The ‘German’ period ended in November 1918 - together with World War One (WW1). United Kingdom (UK) took Tanzania (Tanganyika) under its wings as a protectorate (colony) up to 1961.
